Vinnova, the Swedish Innovation Agency, together with two other agencies for research funding – The Swedish Energy Agency and Formas – collaborate on the venture Strategic innovation areas. The purpose of the venture is to create conditions for international competitiveness as well as to find sustainable solutions to global challenges for societies. The idea is for industry, the public sector, and academia to collaborate for common prioritisations in terms of investments in research, development, and innovation, thus strengthening one another.
The venture financed the conception and production of a wide number of strategic research and innovation agendas, with the aim to support the areas – established or up-and-coming – with the greatest potential to create conditions for international competitiveness and to find sustainable solutions to global challenges for society. A number of agendas in different areas were developed, among them the strategic innovation agenda for aeronautics.
Based on the most promising – from a national perspective – of these agendas, 17 Strategic Innovation Programmes were established and financed with the aim to support the implementation of the strategies suggested in the agenda.
The actors within Swedish aeronautical innovation, who in 2010 had already gathered and written the national innovation agenda for aeronautics, NRA Flyg 2010, presented an update, NRIA Flyg 2013, as part of the call. This agenda contributed to awarding the aeronautics area with one of the original 16 strategic innovation programmes (today 17), whereupon Innovair was created as the formalised actor constellation behind the agendas. Today, NRIA Flyg 2016 has also been produced.
